Egyptian Walking Onions

Perennial

Also Know As ~ Bunching Onions or Tree Onions

They are the onion that keeps on giving. If you love onions, you definitely want this growing in your garden!

They are planted just like cultivated onions, but instead of producing a stem with a flower at the top that yields seeds, a cluster of onion bulbs form.

You can harvest the bulb and separate each onion to plant separately or allow the stem to fall to the ground and the cluster will root and produce a new cluster of onions. Which is why they are called “walking onions”. They will walk through your garden without any assistance. No more buying onion bulbs! As long as you leave roots in the ground, you’ll have a supply of onions.

The green and the white parts are edible and can be used in a variety of dishes. The new bulbs are spicy and best in salads, soups and stir-fries. Mature bulbs flavor is mild and sweet and are an excellent complement to beef, pork, lamb, chicken and sautéed vegetables. If grown individually, the bulbs are not large and are similar in size of a shallot. If grown in clusters, the green part can be used as an endless supply of green onions.

To Grow:

Decide if you want to plant Individually or in Clusters so they can walk on their own. First year bulbs are usually small. The bulbs increase in size during the second year of growth.

Individually: Plant 2 inches of well drained soil about 4 inches a part.

In the late summer/early fall, the bulb will be ready for harvest.

Clusters: Plant about 3 feet a part in well drained soil.

For both, allow for full sun. No fertilization needed if you are adding compost to your soil as needed. Best planted in late spring/early summer or in the fall before your last frost. New clusters form when in the late spring/early summer and the fall.

Continuous pruning will keep them from spreading if the goal is not for them to walk. If they do sprout new clusters, instead of letting them walk, harvest and use them like you would chives or scallions.

As the plant matures, you will see clusters forming from mature clusters which will produce more bulbs!
